The four Branches listed below are as follows:-
1. The Cawthorne / Ingbirchworth Branch.
This is the oldest branch and it shows a direct connection between current members of the family & ancestors born in the 15th century.
Because of the size of this branch, it has has been split up into five separate trees as follows:-
Tree No 1a. The Original Tree.
Originally in Cawthorne / Ingbirchworth followed initially by Swine in Holderness & Ardsley, all in Yorkshire.
(This branch is still alive to-day with descendants living in various parts of the UK & overseas).
Tree No 1b. The Wood Tree.
John Micklethwait of Ardsley & his partner Harriet Wood appear on tree No 1a & their descendants are shown here.
(So far as we know, this branch became extinct early in the 20th century).
Tree No 1c. The Faber Tree.
Thomas Micklethwait of Leeds & his wife Harriet Faber appear on tree No 1a & their descendants are shown here.
(Members of this branch are currently living in York).
Tree No 1d. The Alice Tree.
Anthony Micklethwait of Ingbirchworth & his wife Alice appear on tree No 1a & their descendants are shown here.
(So far as we know, this branch became extinct early in the 18th century except for those shown below on Tree No 1e).
Tree No 1e. The Bower Tree.
Josiah Micklethwait of Cawthorne & his wife Elizabeth Bower appear on tree No 1d & their descendants are shown here.
(This branch is a subsidiary of Tree No 1d & is still alive to-day with descendants living in various parts of the UK & overseas).
2. The Worsbroughdale Branch.
This is the second oldest branch dating back to the very beginning of the 16th century. Unfortunately it has not yet been possible to prove a direct connection between it & the original Cawthorne / Ingbirchworth Branch. Having said that it is almost certain that if researchers can in the future go back far enough, it will be found that the two branches have the same ancestry.
Worsbroughdale & Cawthorne / Ingbirchworth are geographically close & there is clear evidence that members of the two branches knew each other & on occassions did business together. There was even one marriage involving both branches!
This branch shows a direct connection from the very beginning of the 16th century in Yorkshire through to descendants who were to be found not only in Yorkshire but also in the south of England in the 19th century. So far as we know, this branch is now extinct.
Because of the size of the branch, it has has been split up into two separate trees as follows:-
Tree No 2a. The Original Worsbroughdale Tree.
Originally in Worsbroughdale followed initially by Cherry Burton; Yorkshire & then Lincolnshire; Kent & London.
Tree No 2b. The Southern Tree.
Thomas Micklethwait & his wife Beatrice Anderson appear on tree No 2a & their descendants are shown here.
Members of this tree resided in Kent; London, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Sussex & Cambridgeshire.
3. The Hopton Branch.
This is the third oldest branch dating back to the 17th century. Unfortunately it has not yet been possible to prove a direct connection between it & the two earlier branches. Having said that it is almost certain that if researchers can in the future go back far enough, it will be found that the all three branches have the same ancestry.
(This branch appear to have become extinct at the beginning of the 20th century).
4. The UK / USA Branch.
This is the fourth oldest branch also dating back to the 17th century. Unfortunately it has not yet been possible to prove a direct connection between it & the three earlier branches. Having said that it is almost certain that a connection will be proven soon. Recent DNA testing indicates a very strong possibility that this branch has the same ancestors as does the original Cawthorne / Ingbirchworth branch (Tree No 1a).
In 1831 a small group from this branch emigrated to the USA whilst other members of the same family remained in the UK. One Willoughby Micklethwait, one of his brother's sons & other members of the family emigrated whereas Willoughby's brother Jonathan remained in Yorkshire.
Because of the size of this branch, we have three trees as follows:-
Tree No 4a. THE 1st USA Tree - decendants of Willoughby Micklethwait - primarily in Iowa.
The Iowa Gravestone Photo Project web site at:- http://iowagravestones.org/search.php?selected_cid=65&cfield=last&ctype=2&ctxt=MICKELWAIT provides photos of Iowa gravestones).
Tree No 4b. The UK Tree - decendants of Jonathan Micklethwait.
Includes those that are still living in Yorkshire & those that emigrated to Canada & New Zealand.
Tree No 4c. The 2nd USA Tree - decendants of John Micklethwait & his son Joseph primarily in Ohio & Texas.
