The information listed above has been transcribed from old family records. In addition, I have tried to obtain details of any other manorial lordships held by the Micklethwait family. I have learnt that there has never been a requirement for Lords of the Manor to register and as such there is no central record to which one can refer. Further discussions established that tracing manorial lordships is nigh impossible even today, when they can still be bought & sold. Old family records together with the occasional lucky finds amongst manorial documents are the most likely way of tracing manorial lordships.
So far as lucky finds amongst
manorial documents are concerned, I have learnt so far that the family were at
one time Lords of The Manors of Blythburgh with Walberswick; Blythburgh, late
Priory (lands); Thorington Wimples; Westleton; Hinton, late Priory (lands); Mells
in Wenhaston; Westleton Cliffes, otherwise Cleaves; Metfield;
Withersdale; Chevenhall,
otherwise Chepenhall; Rawlings with Elmham; Ilketshall, Ellis & Strattons
– all in Suffolk. Also Wroxham and Salhouse in
